Plant information:
Brassica oleracea var. italica
Sow: February to April
Harvest: February to May
Height: 1.2m+
Early variety that has a long cropping period running from late-winter through until early May.
Sowing instructions:
Start in Jiffy 7C pellets (available here) or seed trays, then pot on into 7cm pots, and again into 9cm before planting out in late spring/early summer.
Seeds germinate in 7-14 days.
Growing instructions:
Purple sprouting broccoli is ideal for those without acres of space as the plants can be planted fairly close together - leave 30cm between plants.
Brassicas are hungry so add a good mulch of compost or manure when planting out and then feed regularly during the growing season.
Protect the plants with netting to deter butterflies from laying eggs on the underside of the leaves.
Notes:
Great for producing crops over winter.
