Plant Information:
Melothria scabra
Sow: April to May
Harvest: July to September
Height: 1.2m+
Difficulty: Beginner/Intermediate
Certainly something different – think cucumbers with a hint of lime. Will happily grow outside in a large pot with something to climb up. Great as an addition to salads or pickled to remind you of the warmth of summer in the cold winter months.
Sowing instructions:
Start seed off undercover in mid-April - try and resist the temptation to sow earlier unless you have access to a heated propagator, or the plants will be slow to put on growth. Best started off in individual cell modules or pellets.
Seeds germinate in 14-28 days.
Growing instructions:
Cucamelons need something to climb up. A south facing wall is ideal, but an obelisk or similar structure will do the job just as well. Resist the temptation to plant out too early as they won't put on growth until the soil warms and the nights aren't as cold.
Harvesting instructions:
Harvest frequently to encourage the plant to produce more fruit.
Notes:
A must for lovers of Cucumbers. Great if you're short on space as plants can be trained vertically (grow in a similar way to peas).
